Transferring job skills

Transferring job skills

I wrote a WalletPop.com story today about a former newspaper reporter who took a buyout and started a new job as a manager at a Dallas strip club.

It sounds like an odd career move, but read the story and see for yourself how his job skills from journalism — critical thinking, creativity, people skills, writing — transferred to a topless bar.

Beyond being a manager, he also writes ad copy, does public relations work for the club, called the Lodge, and helps out in the many ways that workers do at a small business.

Since being laid off in June 2008, I’ve tried to convince employers that my job skills can transfer, but with no luck yet.  I’m not saying I’m going to go the route that this former Dallas Morning News reporter took, but it shows some of various areas that writers, critical thinkers and creative people are needed.
